Ok, welcome to this thread, which was made for you improve your english skill ^^ ..... so, please note that this is " English Speaking Area " so English only you guy ^^ ..... okie, thank for your cooperation .....

The first activity i want to show is improving your reading and evaluating skill, which is merely important for you to be able to reading an essay, an news etc.

well, that's ok ^^ ..... i have a short story which was the another work for my Language Art class. Personally, i , the author, think it quite boring but who knows ! .. maybe you guys would have another opinion about the story but i wouldnt.... anyway, i'll try to find it ( i put it somewhere in my laptop 8-} ) ..... i'll post it up tmr .....

The new light of the day broke through the airplane’s window. Tom could feel the warmness was taking place. He opened his eyes and took the a look around, Sarah was sleeping like a pussy cat in the next seat. One week ago, Sarah saw a TV show about a group of the adventures made the exploring in the South East Asia Jungle . As the geography professor, which she was always proud of, there was no pleasure than having a chance for discovery a new land. Therefore she decided to go there for their winter break. And now, Tom was on the plane with her. Three hours passed, Sarah was now awake and by the next one hour the plane would land off.
“Did you find anything interesting?” Sarah asked when she tried to find the mirror in her handbag.
“Well, up till now, I just see only the blue of sea. Did you sleep well?”
“Uhm, it was quite good, I never feel good if I slept on the seat. You know.”
As she replied, she got out of the seat and walked to the restroom. Tom knew Sarah very well, they had dated for five years and this winter break was the fifth anniversary. The light went through the window and made him dazzling. He closed his eyes to avoid of the sun light but soon, he felt asleep. Sarah waked him up when the plane arrived. Tom laid the luggage down on the bed as he was asking Sarah
“I wonder why did you take this slum for the lodging? It’s so boring. There’s nothing in here!”
“Well, you know why we are here, don’t you? So stop asking that kind of questions. I have a rendezvous with my friend. She lives here and she knows well about the forest. Tomorrow she will take us there. And now, take you sleep!” Sarah commanded Tom.
Tom did not reply. He threw his massy body on the bed, which causes the big delve on the mattress, and took a sleep to get his body away from fatigue. The night was not so long before the sunrise. The young couple was now on the green Jeep, which is used mostly in this region. Mary, Sarah’s friend, was the driver.
“So, did you decide what you are going to do there?”
“I think we’ll have the small picnic on the side of the forest. Would you like to have fun with us ?”
“Well, I’d love to but I’m sorry , I have a appointment with my doctor today. I’m so sorry, Sarah.”
“Oh! Ok , it’s fine. Hey Tom ! Are you awake ?” Sarah nudged Tom hardly.
Tom opened his eyes, the sunlight got through his eyes and make he squint. He did not know much about this area and he did not like the weather here, really. He hated the sun as well as the hot surrounded him and engulfed his body the humidity hid in the air like the spies were waiting for suitable time to get out and harmed his skin.
Thing became better when the Jeep turned into the # 43 street. The old big trees were placed along the street. The Jeep ran for thirty more minutes before it changed its direction into the small dusty road. Suddenly, the Jeep stopped.
“What’s wrong ?” trying to see the thing that laid in front of the car, Sarah asked
“Well, I’m sorry but it seemed the road was blocked by a fallen tree. I think we should go back” The Mary sighed; her hand pointed to the fallen tree was lying hatefully in front of the jeep.
“Is there any other entrance to the forest ?” Sarah asked hopefully.
“I’m afraid that it’s not. This is the only way. So..” The Mary turned to Sarah and gave her sympathetic smile.
“Ok!” Sarah interrupted her friend “Tom, get our stuff ! We gonna walk to the forest.” Sarah declared strongly and then she turned to Tom.
Sarah put her pack bag on and jumped out of the car, Tom followed her. Mary crabbed Sarah’s hand as she walked by and looking at Sarah intently. The wind from the high trees had blew the tiny hair of Sarah backward to show the smiling lips which meant “ It’s ok !”.
A hour of walking under the sweltering hot had impaired Tom’s endurance. He felt exhausted and angry, nothing can harm his suntanned skin which he had spent for many hours at the swimming pool. Sarah looked at her clock and it showed twelve pm. Sarah turned back and she saw Tom was sitting on the rock and breathe hardly.
“ I think we should settle down here. I’m too tired and I don’t want to go anymore.” Tom moaned at Sarah who was standing a mile away.
Sarah walked fast to Tom and grabbed his arm up violently. Then she closed her faces in Tom’s.
“What kind of man are you ? huh ?” Sarah talked angrily “We just have to walk for a couple of minutes. I just find out the good place for rest. Do you want your skin to be burned under this sun ?” Sarah asked and turned back walking forward.
Tom went along behind Sarah after few seconds until he could catch it up. The winds now was blowing from the forest , which Tom and Sarah were moving forward to . And as it moved pass the leaves, it created the high pitch sound like the soprano voice , female high voice , in the Opera “The Phantom in the Opera House”.
They settled down on the glassy land. Tom took out a handkerchief to wipe sweet dry. Sarah stepped toward to the forest.
“I think it would be the interesting place to explore. Do you think so, honey ?” Sarah turned to Tom and gave him a blink.
“Yes, it really is an interesting place but I don’t like it. The rate of the moisture in the forest may harm my skin and …..”
“Can you please stop talking about your skin ? What kind of man are you ?”
Sarah interrupted angrily and walked fast toward the forest
Tom became embarrassed. He stood up and began to move with the stuffs on his back. The sun now was moving to it peak, the light-ray , which was being thrown down from the sun , was burning the outer layer of the Earth brutally. Tom felt something unpleasant was happening as he walked into the shade. The dews on the grasses and the water underneath the Earth layer were evaporated at the same time and they made a mixture of the steam and moisture from the earth. This mixture rushed into Tom’s respiratory system, it made Tom nearly sneeze. Suddenly, Sarah stopped and Tom rushed into her.
“What’s wrong?” Tom winced.
“ Do you see that ?” Sarah pointed to the front, her eyes opened widely.
There was a deer, a real deer, eating grasses. For the first time in Sarah life, she saw a deer in front of her eyes. When Sarah was a girl, she loved Christmas, there was no pleasure than the moment she saw Rudolph , one of the Santa’s reindeer with the big red nose. The deer began to run when it saw people.
“Quick !! Run !!” Sarah yelled and ran after the deer
“No, Sarah !! You shouldn’t go into the forest.! Sarah !”
It was too late, Sarah now got into the forest. The atmosphere became cooler inside. Tom really believe that he just stepped in the different world when he got inside. Tom stopped and inhaled some fresh air in. Like the water irrigated on the drought soil, the steam in the air had brought all the water back in his respiratory system, which was taken away by the brutal hot outside. Tom quit his own reverie and soon, he realized that if he did not hurry up , he would lose the track with Sarah , who was moving constantly forward. Tom was stopped by the hand of Sarah. Sarah put her fingers on her lips without moving her pupil. She was watching the deer carefully. With all of her deftness, Sarah stooped her body down and silently she moved to the deer like an assassin, she wanted to touch the deer. But one things that Sarah did not know, every wild animal has the instinct behavior that it could know the moving of someone toward it and it will run away intermediately. This deer is not the exception, as soon as Sarah threw herself toward the deer. The deer turned around and gave a big jump over the earth mound. Sarah was losing her equilibrium, and soon she felt down. Sarah no more wondered why the deer made a high jump instead of the a run. She was now like the small stone, rolling from the high mound of the earth , down to the slope and ended with the big “ slash !” down to the cliff, there was the chasm.
“ Help !!! Tom !! Help !!” Sarah was now over come by fear and panic, which she yelled along with.
“ Sarah !!!” Tom shouted and ran to her. He dropped his body down on the land and tried to catch Sarah. Sarah was now like a monkey who dangles himself on the branch of tree with one hand. Tome grabbed her hand tightly as if he would lose something precious.
“ I got you !! I got you !! Now, listen to what I say. Give me your other hand, come on!” Tom gave his other hand out to Sarah and tried to catch her as well. Finally, he got her two hands then he began to speak quickly
“ Now, find the rock or something you can stand on. Use it as the platform. Stand on it. And with all your energy, give me a spring , ok ?” Tom spoke as he wanted to make sure that Sarah understand what he meant.
Sarah looked down, she found a piece of rock which projected out of the cliff. Sarah putted one leg on and with all of her strength, Sarah accumulated her strength on that leg to make a spring. Unfortunately, before Sarah could make it, the stone couldn’t withstand Sarah’s strength, it felt down along with Sarah.
“ Help !” Sarah shouted.
Tom was tugged by Sarah’s falling. He slipped for a distance until he feel down to the chasm and with Sarah underneath. Everything came dark.
Tom opened his eyes. He felt the pain was running all over his body. He tried to reach his arm up. But it seemed hopeless, a branch bore heavily upon his arm. Tom was embracing Sarah into his body. Sarah was ok he thought. Tom tried to wake Sarah up by shaking her body. She was now the only person who could remove the branches and help him out of the mess. Tom shook harder and harder, he called her name. Sarah’s body resisted the shaking until it making a roll and felt off Tom’s body. Sarah’ head hit the ground as you drop your TV remote control, the TV turns on, Sarah opened her eyes. Sarah put her hands over her head and massaged softly. She winced and she saw Tom smiling face when she turned to him.
“Thank Gods, you’re awake !” Tom smiled painfully.
Sarah crept to Tom’s lying body as fast as possible. Both of her hands were used to lift the branches up and moved it away from Tom. But the lifting the branches was not a easy jobs, especially the injury woman. There were many different size of branches and as they knitted together, they made up the hard mess. Sarah had to broke down each branches that she could. Then she removed them out of the mess until there were some big branches which required her strength. Sarah didn’t even look at Tom when she was removing the branches. She did not want to see Tom’s pain , and for the other reason, she was afraid of Tom. Sarah stood up, there were two or three big branches. She knew that she couldn’t removed it to the other place, she was so exhausted.
“Tom, I’ll lifted these braches up and make a space for you to take your arms out, can you do it ?” She asked without looking at Tom.
“ Ok, do it !” Tom reply.
Sarah stood back for the impetus. Then, she ran as hard as she could toward the branches until she rushed into the lowest branch, which bore heavily upon Tom. She used her hands to lift it up, it was so heavy as she thought. Sarah clenched her teeth and accumulated all of her strength into her two hands and made the last bounce. It was successful, the branches swung into the air for few centimeters and finally gave a big “ slash” sound when they hit the ground. Few centimeters were enough for Tom to emancipated his arm out of the mess before the branches came back to where they were. Tom rolled his body around to make sure that he was away from the mess.
Tom assumed that the sun was setting down. There was not much sun here. Tom felt uncomfortable with the rate of moisture here. It had been hours after the release of Tom’s arm. They were finding the way out of the forest. Sarah did not talk to Tom since that moment, the accident, she just moved forward. The confusion of the forest made both of them felt dizzy and withered their ability of moving. Finally, they sat down for some rest. Tom moved and sat next to Sarah then he began to speak.
“Do you think we will get out of here ?” Tom asked gently.
Sarah replied with silent, she was drawing some undefined images on the ground. But then her lips mumbled
“ I believe we will, you will make it won’t you ?” Sarah looked up Tom.
Tom got up, flicking off the dust and extending his hand to Sarah. And with a smile he declared
“ I will make it, we will get out of this forest. I guaranteed !”
Sarah grabbed Tom’s hands and stood up. His words seemed like the knives which used to make the hole of confusion within Sarah wider. She smiled, an awkward smile. They began to move, but this time, Tom was the one who lead. He crabbed her hands as tight as he could as if that hands would slip off his hand immediately. They kept on moving forward without any knowing of direction, they were covered all green which was becoming darker. The afternoon winds ran through the trees and made the soprano voice raised up.
The night had put the enormous blanket over the sky. “ You can not see the light of star or moon when you are in jungle” Sarah still remembers that quote in the “ Travelers: South East Asia”. “ We are leading nowhere”, Sarah claimed. Tom held Sarah’s hand tighter; pulling Sarah closer to him. Soon, they saw nothing but hazy images. The leaves rustled when they walked by. Tom looked up tiredly , their road seemed endless. Everything remained the exactly the same, the trees were the same, the roads were the same. Tom was now thinking of the welcome lodging, he did not care about his skin anymore. Suddenly, he was pulled back. There was Sarah, standing tiredly with her face facing down and crying.
“ I wanna take some rest !” Sarah cried.
Tom turned back and stepped toward Sarah. He pulled her closer and gave a big hug. Tom was trying to conform Sarah with fondness. They settled down on the rocks nearby. Sarah was panting while Tom tried to make the fire with the falling leaves. He gathered the falling leaves into one spot, rubbing two branches ,which he found earlier. The rubbing made the branches became hotter and soon it began to catch align. Tom quickly dropped the burning branches into the spot of leaves, then it started to burn. Both Tom and Sarah looked at the burning fire attentively. The burning fire reflected their desire of survival in this situation, lost in the jungle. Tom heard the fire was crackling, he sensed problem.
“The humid rate in tropical rain forest is the first things that you have to concern” Sarah remembered the quote in the “ Travelers: South East Asia”. The smoke from the fire came out really quick after the leaves started burning. It liked the snake, came out of the hole, then rapidly swallowed them in and choked them tightly. Sarah tried to cover her nose to avoid the smoke and use her other hand as the fan; she swayed her hand hardy to make a space within the smoke. The soprano voice raised up again, but this time it was not in “The Phantom of the Opera house” but the Fairy-tale opera. It blew the smoke away to other direction. Both Sarah and Tom coughed hardly, they really became exhausted. Tom sat flunk on the ground with tiredness.
Sarah came back to her rock. She sat down and breathed hardly. Wondering around, Sarah could see the hopeless ending for this travel. She gazed at the sky “it’s dark!” she mumbled. She never thought that her trip would be worst like this. She used to think that she would have the wonderful picnic on the grassy hill with all the sunshine covered; the marigolds shine in the sun and sway lightly when the winds come from the highland nearby. Or the discoveries in the humid jungle; the current of the water flows gently over the forest, bringing vitality for the forest; the old big trees stretched their branches out, then the birds will come and nests will be formed. That was what Sarah imaged about the rain forest while she was curling up in the air plane’s seat back there.
Sarah quit out of her reveries because of some ticking as it was creeping at her back. She opened her eyes uncomfortably and she saw Tom. Tom was sitting death. His eyes opened widely; without the pupils moving. Tom began to speak when he caught Sarah looking, full with suspicion.
“ Sit still and don’t move, ok?” Tom whispered.
“ What is on my back ?” Sarah cried,
She could feel her blood was freezing as the thing was creeping along her backbone. And when it reached near to the neck; its breath made her shudder. By using her experiences, Sarah could tell that there was an animal creeping on her back. And, of course, the only animal who could creep and gives out the menacing breath .Snake is the one . Sarah spoke out each word clearly as she was out of breath.
It seemed that Tom was able to understand what Sarah was saying. He nodded and at the same time, Tom put one finger over his mouth which is the simple of “ silent “ or “ do not move”. Tom looked around to find stick. He grabbed one from the remains of the last fire. Tom stood straight up and stepped back a little bit; then he began to run. He ran as fast as the shuttle and as if he was the professional warrior; he flung the snake away from Sarah’s body when his other hand pulled Sarah back.
The snake rolled for a little while and soon it got back in it fighting mode. The bell, which on the top of its tail, raised up and started ringing. Sarah now realized that where the twinkle sounds came from. There was a side-winder, opening his mouth widely showing his poisoned teeth out. The ringing sound on his tail reminded Sarah about the sound of the death’s chain in “ Christmas Carol”; thinking about it made her shiver. The snake was creeping forward Tom and Sarah liked the king walking gracefully to two wretched people.
“ Stand behind my back” Tom said without moving his sight out of the creeping leg-less body.
“ It might get out of here because of the smoke. Maybe the smoke came in his cave and chased him out here. I think he was very angry now.” Tom tried to explain to Sarah.
The couple stepped back as the snake was moving forward. Sarah tripped over something when they were stepping back. She looked back and she saw her backpack. Without any thinking, Sarah turned to Tom and started speaking.
“ I will find anything in the bag which might help us. Can you try to stop the snake coming hear ?”
“ Ok, I’ll try but I don’t know if I can stopped it longer, so, try to make it quick, ok ? “ Tom asked nervously.
Sarah sat down immediately and started to open the bag. Comb, mirror, dried-food, tissues, all the things she had found was useless. Sarah became hopeless and ,finally, she dropped the bag on the ground. And she heard the sound which is made when a hard thing hit the ground. Sarah picked the bag up as quick as she could and get grid of completely. Everything felt violently on the ground , and , as she thought, the flashlight came out.
Sarah stooped and grabbed the flashlight up. Tom could not resist anymore longer; the snake threw itself toward Tom when it reached the appropriate distant. And dealing with the skillful thrower is not always the easy thing, especially to the fresh man of jungle, Tom. The wooden stick was not useful anymore when the skillful side-winder rolled his body up, around the stick, and using it as the base to make the last attack. A poisoned bite was made on Tom’s neck; Tom did not feel anything yet, everything was done in only five seconds; five seconds was enough for the snake finished its enemy.
“ Tom ! Tom!” Sarah yelled with despair;
She ran to Tom when he was collapsing. Sarah gave the hard big beat on the snake head with the flashlight. The monster’s head was smashed. Sarah collapsed next to Tom body; her tears dropped down on Tom’s face. Tom looked at Sarah, smiling
“ I never see you cry before” Tom smiled gracefully.
“ Stop it!” Sarah covered her mouth, trying to stop the tear “You are hurt, I have to take you out of this crushed place, yes, I have to !”
Tom could see the flame of survival burning in the Sarah’s eyes.
The snake’s head was mashed again by the pressure of Sarah’s feet, which was now doubled by carrying Tom’s body. Tom’s hand was put on Sarah’s shoulder. Slowly, Sarah stood up. Then, she began to run.
“ Sarah, put me down. If you run now you can save your life, I believe that other members in that snake’s nest will come out soon, you better run for your life” Tom whispered.
Sarah did not answer, she loved Tom and she did not to leave him. More and more cut appeared on Sarah’s skin; she was cut by the leaves which were now as sharp as knife. Sarah continued to head forward; she did not know which direction was the exit. A adult male’s body was too big for a woman. Suddenly, Tom turned over and ,as the result, he felt on the ground.
“ What are you doing ?” Sarah shouted
“ We are in the wind, the snakes will smell it and come here soon, so, leave me here and run for your life!” Tom spoke.
“ But I cant leave you here, I cant “ Sarah dropped down crying.
“ No, you are the strong woman, jut go home safely without me, ok?” Tom smiled,
“ No, I don’t do like that”
Sarah got up and started to dragged Tom along. But ,then, she heard something over her head, the engine sound. Sarah looked up; “ A helicopter ?” she mumbled. There was a light within Sarah’s brain; she raised the flashlight toward the helicopter, which was about right on her head now, and turned it on. A whole ray of light broke through the layers of leaves and released itself into the sky upon; the helicopter saw that. It moved to Sarah’s position and ,soon, it dropped down a rope ladder. When the last step of the rope ladder was about to touch the ground. Sarah turned to Tom, but, he was not there anymore. Sarah got into panic when she looked around, searching Tom. Sarah saw something moving in the brush but before she could reach there; it showed up, a fighting side-winder. Sarah moved back to the rope ladder and put her feet on the step of the ladder. Then, she went up.
The white ceiling appeared in front of her eyes . She was now in the hospital; she was safe and Tom was gone. Sarah turned to the window, her eyes caught the image of the man. There was Tom, standing next to the window smiling eyes at Sarah. Slowly, Sarah got out the bed; moving to Tom’s image; she could not believe in her eyes anymore. Tom opened his arms widely to greet Sarah. Sarah ran to Tom; giving him a big hug but ,then, she felt flying; she was flying with Tom.
The next morning news with the title “ A young woman had jumped out the window on the thirteenth floor of ABCXYZ hospital”

Actually, I have not ever heard the "sex tourism" but in my opinion, this could be the way to be satisfy the lust of sexual intercourse. In fact, the Vietnamese policy bans any lustful sale but in abroad there are laws to help people solve the natural instinct.

I never heard of sex tourism before in my life indeed but it's not all that bad. As KTT had mentioned above, it's just another way of mutual sexual satisfaction between people from different places in the world. Actually it comes from the curiosity to taste sex intercourse with foreigners, later when the demand is too great, this type of service is born to meet that need. However in Vietnam, it's not popular, somehow because people can't afford it and it is against something called Oriental customs which are leading Vietnamese's spiritual life.

Mexico City [3 August 2008]—The XVII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2008) opens today, with scientists, community and political leaders urging resolute action and commitment on the part of all stakeholders.

“AIDS 2008 is taking place at a unique moment in the epidemic, when there is widespread consensus on the urgency of ensuring universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010,” said AIDS 2008 International Co-Chair Dr. Pedro Cahn, President of the International AIDS Society (IAS) and Fundación Huésped in Buenos Aires, Argentina. “What we now need is action on the part of all stakeholders. As we gather in Mexico, each of us must ask ourselves: What can I do to end AIDS? In 2008, there are no longer bystanders in this global struggle,” he added.

In 2005, world leaders acting through the United Nations committed to the goal of providing universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support to all those in need by 2010. AIDS 2008 is a collective opportunity to evaluate progress towards this goal and identify strategies for accelerating prevention and treatment scale up. Central to these deliberations will be a discussion of how specifically to tackle the underlying drivers of HIV risk and vulnerability – including gender inequality, human rights violations and HIV-related stigma and discrimination. Another major topic to be explored is the importance of strengthening overall health systems in poor countries.

Sunday, 3 August Opening Session
The week-long event begins on Sunday, 3 August, with welcoming remarks by the AIDS 2008 Co-Chairs and an official opening from Mexican President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa. It will also feature an address by United Nations Director-General Ban Ki-moon, representing his first International AIDS Conference since being appointed in 2006. Other major leaders participating in the Opening Session include: Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Denzil Douglas; Former President of Bostwana, Festus Mogae; First Vice President of Spain, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega; Mexico’s Secretary of Health, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos; UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot; and World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan.

The Opening Session will also feature remarks by Ms. Mony Pen, a community activist and advocate for HIV-positive women globally and in Cambodia, and 13-year old youth advocate, Keren Dunaway Gonzales. Since a very young age, Miss Gonzales has spoken publicly about her HIV status in an effort to reduce HIV stigma and discrimination in her home country of Honduras, as well as internationally.

“Today’s inspiring panel of Opening Session speakers – representing individuals living with HIV, as well as some the world’s most powerful political figures – symbolizes the unique feature of this conference: to bring together the many diverse participants engaged in and leading the global response to HIV,” said AIDS 2008 Local Co-Chair Dr. Luis Soto Ramírez, Head of the Molecular Virology Unit at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán and Coordinator of the Clinical Care Committee of CONASIDA, Mexico’s National AIDS Council. “Mexico is honored to host this seminal event and to welcome the International AIDS Conference to Latin America for the very first time.”

AIDS 2008 Scientific Programme
Over 5,000 abstracts – including 103 late breaker abstracts – will be presented at the conference, selected from the more than 10,600 submissions (another 2,742 abstracts will appear in the CD-ROM only). The full text of all accepted abstracts is available through a searchable database on the AIDS 2008 website.

Among the many issues to be explored through the AIDS 2008 Scientific Programme are: the long-term impact of antiretroviral treatment on brain function; analyses of heart attack risk in patients taking antiretrovirals; the emergence of HIV resistance; and new studies on the relative efficacy of various treatment regimens. Other timely research topics include: recent experience with so-called task shifting, or the use of non-physicians and other medical personnel to provide HIV care in areas with acute physician shortages; the current status of HIV vaccine and microbicides research; how best to approach HIV prevention in both generalized and concentrated epidemics; the use of antiretroviral therapy as a prevention strategy; and the legal and ethical implications of laws to criminalize HIV transmission.

Special Sessions to Highlight Key Issues, Regional Responses
Throughout the week, a number of Special Sessions will highlight key issues. On Monday, the session, HIV/AIDS and Health System Reform: Achieving Universal Coverage, will feature former US President Bill Clinton and Julio Frenk, of the Carso Institute and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A session on Tuesday will feature a report back from Living 2008: The Positive Leadership Summit, a pre-conference by and for people living with HIV. In the Wednesday session, Looking to the Future—the Epidemic in 2031 and New Directions in AIDS Research, Anthony Fauci, Director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and UNAIDS Executive Director Peter Piot will speak about the future of AIDS research and the global response, with additional remarks by three community activists from the US, South Africa and Indonesia. On Thursday, a panel of five national AIDS ambassadors will discuss the status of political leadership and accountability for universal action. Other Special Sessions will explore evidence-based approaches to addressing stigma and discrimination; HIV travel restrictions; health systems strengthening; operations research; HIV prevention; and the global financial architecture for HIV/AIDS. Additional sessions will explore strategies to address the needs of children at risk for and living with HIV, as well as the need for the integration of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services.

In addition, for the first time, the conference will offer six region-specific sessions. Each session will feature a range of experts who will help frame a discussion of key issues facing that particular region.

Programme Activities
Open to conference delegates and the general public, the AIDS 2008 Global Village is a space to share knowledge and skills, build coalitions, and promote interactive learning among communities living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Established in 2004, the Youth Programme empowers young people by encouraging youth – including youth living with HIV – to help plan, participate in and benefit from the conference (visit www.youthaids2008.org for more information). Under the theme Culture in Action, the AIDS 2008 Cultural Programme will showcase the relationship between AIDS, art and culture. Conference Hubs – A New Feature of AIDS 2008
In an effort to expand participation to many who cannot travel to Mexico City, organizers will transmit proceedings to communities around the world through a network of conference hubs. More than 100 hubs in 40 countries are registered, with a capacity of more than 9,500 participants. An Official Hub will be held at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban, South Africa. How Do We Define MSM?

It seems like the most straightforward of definitions. We’re not talking about whether a man identifies as bisexual, gay, straight, etc., just men who have sex with men.

But this question arose for me today at the MSM pre-conference. I attended a session wherein results of a survey among MSM in Britain were presented. Among criteria that had to have been met to have been included in the survey data, a man had to answer “yes” to one of the following two questions: Have you had sex with a man in the last year? and/or Have you ever had sex with a man? If the answer to one or both was “yes,”the data was admissible. If the answer was “no” to both, the participant was excluded.

Important to note that another criterion was that aparticipant be 18 years of age or older. Most of the participants hooked into the survey through the website Gaydar. Others, to a significantly lesser extent, were found through clinics and community organizations.

So, in a hypothetical situation, if a man had sex (and “sex” was not clearly defined as far as I could tell) with a man once in 1996 and had previously and since had sex only with women (or no sex at all), his survey would be included. But if a man, say, identifies as gay but has never had (or has not yet had) sex with a man, his survey was not counted.

It is not my intention in any way to call this survey flawed. The surveyors defined their parameters, seemed often and acutely aware of the limitations of the survey, and the results (not yet analyzed) were very interesting. But I think it poses an interesting question about a label - MSM - that maybe seems otherwise more straightforward than straight, gay, bisexual, etc.: How do we define MSM and does a young gay man or a man who has only relatively recently identified as gay, who has not had a sexual experience with another man but intends to eventually (whether sooner or later), not count in that grouping? And, of course, this question engenders other questions along similar lines.



Also, two moments of the day that stuck out for me:

1. David Wilson, of the World Bank, used the phrase “remorseless execution focus.” I think I like it. It’s kind of appealing. Highly rhetorical (significantly detracting from its sexiness), and I’m not sure exactly what it means, but it stuck in my head (and I’ve already started using it myself).

2. Peter Piot,the Executive Director of UNAIDS, said, “AIDS is opening a small hole in this wall of homophobia.” This gave me pause. Is this true? For whom is this just the opposite? Is it cause and effect like that? Is it AIDS itself? Is it activism that has arisen around AIDS? And temporally, if this statement was far from true 20 years ago, is it true now…or vice versa…and for whom?

umh just like what i said ... love in our unite is pretty difficult to find . most come to others due to money sex or reputation ... but not at all , nothing is impossible ... i am a dreamy and romantic person , teenager also ...
